Food for Thought Friday - Christian Vs. Secular music

This is a very controversial subject. But I'm going to pause before I even get started and say this- If you are a Christian and you don't listen to secular music, I'm NOT calling you legalistic. And if you are a Christian and you DO listen to secular music, I'm NOT saying you're going to hell. This is my personal opinion that I've decided to share with you based on my convictions. So, now that we've cleared that up, I'll go ahead and dive into my personal stance on the topic. First of all, I know some of you tend to use the terminologies wrong so, let me make sure we're all on the same page. Let's  start of by defining the word 'secular.' A lot of people think that by saying something is secular, it means evil...which isn't exactly true. The word, according to the dictionary, is actually defined as "Denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis." It doesn't say anything about evil. But does the fact that it isn't spiritual make it evil? My answer. No. In the arena as far as secular music goes, I think the decision really comes down to conviction, common sense and the type of secular music you're listening to. You need to look at your ipod or your playlist and make sure you know this is something with a message you're okay with. I highly disagree with songs that promote sensual things or language. It's not something I want flooding my mind let alone something I thing God wants me to be listening to. But on the other hand, there's also the aspect that there are some secular songs out there that are really not that bad but, the particular artist might not be the one to be looking into. Example - Katy Perry. She openly professes that God doesn't exist. I for one, will NOT support that. I used to be okay with her song, "Roar" and there was also another one that was okay. But now, I refuse to listen to her at all. That was a decision I made based on conviction. Do I still listen to covers of the song "Roar?" Yes. Because it has the same positive message, minus the negative atmosphere.
Next thing. There are alternatives out there! Have you ever considered listening to a more mild version of the type of music you love? Pentatonix for one, takes bad words out of their songs, changes them up a bit and in the end, they actually sound quite a bit better than the original! But, even better than Ptx is (once again) Anthem Lights. Thy also have the benefit of being Christians. They choose their covers carefully and definitely make them sound fabulous. Then, we have alternatives like Owl City. Now, I personally really like OC because he has such a unique way of bringing songs to the table. He DOES claim to be a Christian and his songs often have hidden meanings if you really pay attention. But usually they're just fun songs. Also, if you're obsessed with Dubstep (like me), you need to check out Lindsey Stirling. She's probably currently the most popular(living) violinist in the world! But, really, when it boils down to it, I think the best route to take it is itunes. You choose your songs individually and aren't pressured to buy a whole album. I know people like Bruno Mars or Justin Timberlake can have a good song here or there and then the rest of the album just sucks (I'm talking lyrically, not vocally). Am I out to hate on every artist who doesn't do Christian music? Absolutely not! We're called to love people. And I appreciate the talent of SEVERAL secular artists. What can you expect from a person who has never heard of or accepted Christ than the influence of the world to be in their lyrics? Exactly my point. But to choose to not be a part of that mindset is a great act of obedience. You need to pray and ask God where you are supposed to draw the line in what you're filling your mind with. You will eventually find yourself living out the lyrics you're putting in your head (though it can affect some people more than others). So, in a nutshell? I stand neutral right now. The amount of Christian music I listen to versus the amount of secular I listen to is perfect for me and my walk spiritually with Christ. As long as you pray about it and feel confident that you aren't compromising in any way and make sure you aren't being affected negatively by the lyrics, then you should be okay. :)  Remember, the absolute goal is to be like Him. Not like the world. Grow closer to Him daily. Love him. Love people. (1 Peter 2:17) ~KJ

Winter Jam, Kari Jobe and The Escape

Hey guys! I'm happy to say that there's some really cool stuff coming your way this Fall! First of all, The Winter Jam Tour Spectacular 2014!!!! I'm sure a lot of you have heard of it. To those who haven't heard of it - It's Christian Music's largest ever tour! Yesterday they announced the west coast tour dates/line up. I can say for a fact that it's an amazing concert. Last year, I had the privileged of attending Winter Jam and LOVED every second of it. Headlining Hillsong United and featuring artists like Jeremy Camp, Trip Lee and Everfound, the concert is only $10 at the door. No tickets required! It's going to be fantastic!
To find dates, times and locations, please click on the link - http://www.jamtour.com/
Next! I"m excited to announced that our beloved Kari Jobe is getting married! Singer/songwriter, Cody Carnes just proposed to her yesterday and naturally, she said YES!

They also have done a song together in the past you most likely have heard on the radio or in church:

Moving on to the next BIG thing - Anthem Lights. HUGE, GINORMOUS NEWS ABOUT THEM!!!! No, It's not the fact that Caleb got married (which is cool), or the fact that Alan and Brycie are having another baby (which is even more cool). No. It's this: Anthem Lights have a new album coming out!!!!!! Okay, yeah. I sort of freaked out when I heard about that...and am sort of still freaking out about it.
I"m going to go ahead and let you see the album cover.
It's called "Escape" and they're been posting little teasers if it lately. The release date is October 7th. But, they know their fans don't like to wait so, they're going to let their first single out next month. Also, you can hear another single from the new album called, "Best Thing" on their YouTube Channel. The Escape record is also going to have a T-Shirt. Speaking of which, if you want to get some discounted merch, go ahead and check out their shop site right here - https://shopanthemlights.com/store. Here's another thing: They still DO have one or two Official Music Videos coming out from their "Cover Part III" project. So, that's something to get stoked about as well. They did a Google+ Hangout last night where they discussed several things they're working on right now and also, answered a few twitter questions. I'd like to address one thing real quick. I really like the way Anthem Lights handle themselves. There are quite a few haters out there who disagree with the fact that they are a pop band. Plain and simple. Frankly, I don't know why. They don't compromise and they're made it CLEAR that what they do is a ministry to reach out, not only to believers but also to non-believers. I think it's a great thing they're doing and I'll just say this: Please do not have on Anthem Lights! They are godly, Christian men who are trying to do a ministry! If you do not agree with their methods then I'd probably be better hat you didn't listen to them ...or at least the songs you disagree with for one reason or another, than flooding their social media with hate comments. It's not cool to hate on other Christians. :\ Also, I think I forgot to mention: "Escape" is an album of originals, not covers.  The purpose of the record is positive, uplifting and God-honoring. Plus...it's pink. I mean, c'mon. Who can resist a pink album cover?? Not me. ;)
Anyway, that's about it for now! I hope you guys enjoyed it! Love and peace out! ~KJ

Music Video Monday: Moriah Peters

I'm going to be completely honest right now....Moriah Peters has just gained my respect like you don't know with this song! It's a fabulous twist when she chose to feature Andy Mineo (Who also happens to be one of my favorite rappers). She brought something different to the table while also  staying original. I assumed she'd change the song to be more of a hip-hop type of beat. But no. Even though it HAS a hearty beat to match up with the portion of rap in there, it's primarily twisted with an electric guitar, making it have a rock-ish atmosphere, if that makes sense at all. I'd also like to give some serious credit to Moriah's voice. #AMAZING

Leave your comments and let me know what you thought! Thanks, guys! ~KJ

Food for Thought Friday - Next Generation

Purpose. Everyone wants to have a purpose in life. Everyone wants to make a difference. Everyone wants to be looked at with significance. Everyone has that standard that they strive toward. But here's the question. How many people actually strive to reach that standard? How many people actually take the time to realize the importance in that? There's a vital note that people commonly forget. And it's this - There's only ONE you. You need to make the best of it! You need to build up your security and be yourself. Know who you are in Christ and how He views you as a loving Father. Then, once you're confident, you need to make a courageous step and grow a stronger, more intimate one-on-one relationship with Christ. Keep in mind, we can NEVER know everything about God. There's always something new to learn, to discover and to live by. After you feel confident with yourself and your relationship with Christ, it's time to prepare for action. It doesn't matter how old you are. This is the exact point I'm trying to make with this post. If you are a tween, teenager or young adult, you ARE the Next Generation. We are the future music artists, politicians, doctors and authors. The people who will grow up and influence this country...this WORLD for better or for worse. It's our responsibility to take a stand for what we know is right. For the truth. WE hold the responsibility to make disciples. No. It's not a matter of if you're going to grow up and be a pastor or a missionary. Quite the contrary in fact. We are called to make disciples regardless of who we are. Leading people to Christ. Being His light. How can we do that? Well, one thing is to make correct decisions. Nobody's perfect but let's use music as an example. I"m sure a lot of you can relate to this. Say you're hanging out with a friend who is an unbeliever. They're going to watch what you do. You, at that point, become the example. If you listen to music talking about inappropriate subject or contain a lot of bad language, what kind of example is that? Even the way you dress can speak a thousand words. Ladies, modesty. Clingy clothing and revealing stuff that draws attention to yourself is going to show that you don't care about modesty. According to the bible, we're supposed to be modest. In this day in age, it's taken so lightly, people don't think it applies to them when really, it does. We need to decide which is more important to us, Trending or following God. The answer should be evident. As the next generation, don't let your shyness get in the way. Accepting Jesus as a whole is a HUGE step. But you need to be ready to step out of your comfort zone and make some more huge steps. Sometimes, you're even the example towards other believers! They might look at you and your relationship with Christ and want more! They might consult with you for advice to have the same relationship. Ministering to people that way and helping them grow doesn't just benefit THEM. It also benefits YOU. Shining your light in this world often affects people far more than you know, but in the process, it also changes you as a person...for the better. Here's how I want you to look at ministry. Look at it as changing the world, bit by bit. Sometimes that's simply being there for a friend who's going through a lot. Other times it might be just helping stack chairs in church. If only a few people do this, how many people will follow the lead? But then, what if a lot of people did this? What if thousands of people across the world took a stand and led the change? We ARE the Next Generation and it's our responsibility to change the world one step at a time. Will YOU lead the change? ~KJ

Manafest and The Moment

Multiple Dove Award nominee and Canadian rap/rock artist, Manafest has once again done a fantastic job with his new release, "The Moment." I"m just going to say straight off - It's the same thing you'd typically expect from Manafest...just better. If I could describe it in the very best way, it's just...more musical. I know, not a very good description but that's the best way to explain it. First of all, if you aren't familiar with Manafest (Christopher Greenwood), his style is absolutely unique. It's a lot of rock but its' also a lot of rap. This new album has quite a twist. The best way I can explain it is that it's leaning VERY slightly toward an added R&B twist. Once again, I think it's a fantastic improvement and the rap in there is super smooth. It's a refreshing little twist in there. Once again, there IS another collaboration with Thousand Foot Krutch's Trevor McNeven on the album. I think it was one of the best songs on the album so, I'm going to let you guys here it.
Definitely leave your comments and let me know what you think! :) ~KJ

Food for thought Friday - Bye bye depression!

Depression. It causes so many horrible things to happen. It changes people. It causes people to commit suicide. For Christians, it's easier to overcome depression. But it's not always the easiEST.... Actually, sometimes it's one of the hardest emotions to overcome. But, there are some solutions. I know it probably sounds cliche but, seriously, pray. It's really  important to pray and people often underestimate it's power. That time you take just to give it all to God can cause so much relief in itself. Because God gives you peace. Another thing you can do is listen to music. Probably nothing too slow because (at least for me) that depresses me more. But preferably something either relatable for the particular thing your going through or maybe something bouncy to get you feeling stronger and happier. It really depends on the time and person but, music seriously helps. Here's the thing you need to remember: Fill up on Jesus and you have no room for anything else. When you're depressed, fill up on Jesus. Pray asking for His peace. Simple as that. Also, something that DOESN'T help is shutting the world out. You need to consult with a parent or a friend and just vent your feeling or whatever's wrong. Preferably someone older or more spiritually mature so that they can give you wisdom to help you in that area. But just simply telling a friend or sibling helps. When you're depressed, think of it as a test. Everything happens for a reason  (Ecclesiastes 3:1) Think of every bad think that happens to you as a test that will make you stronger.
If you have Jesus in your life, you have everything. He'll make it better. Just don't do what a lot
of people do if they're angry or upset. Which is blame God, He's gotten you this far so don't stop
trusting him.  He might let you bend but he won't let you break. Remember, He loves you and
He cares for you.   Also, never think you're the only one going through what you're going
through, you aren't. Trust me. Everyone's had that point in their life where they didn't want
to keep going. But that's what you have to do. Keep on going and trusting God. it's a huge
act of faith but it's crucial that you don't let   something get to a point where you start veering
away from Him. During those hard times are  when you need to lean on Him  the most.
Always remember that. Oh, and one more thing. Realize that your attitude affects other people...
sometimes more than you realize. If you're clinging to something that completely changes you as a person,
for the worse, I think you need to let God and let go. You want to be a light in this dark world, not the
other way around. Shine your light and show people that you can overcome.

Next, we have a song from the amazing...Lecrae. His new song, "Nuthin'" :) It makes it's way into the number  4 spot.

I appreciate the love when I rock the stage
But I don't do this for props and things
It's nothing at all, It's Christ inside that's
Got me spittin on the mic tonight
I appreciate the love when I rock the stage
But I don't do this for props and things
It's nothing at all, It's Christ inside that's
Got me spittin on the mic tonight

I'll probly never be the type to spend two bucks on fine dutch
But I wan touch hearts [?]
I come to do what the Lord say
Got my lifestyle flipped to fit His forte yeah
I'm up early like moms and grits
Getting fed daily bread 'til my mind is script'd
And my rhymes intent is to point straight at the cross
Without using clever lines and [?]
I know you'd probably be impressed if I cleverly used my melody
To share Christ without using His name heavily
But I'd rather be saying His name so much you could never get me confused
Or discredit me
'Cause I don't wanna do this, I used to be a Judas
It's only Christ in me that got me tryin to make it through this
I'm givin up time, givin up rhyme
'Cause it ain't about me getting mine dog I'm nothing

I appreciate the love when I rock the stage
But I don't do this for props and things
It's nothing at all, It's Christ inside that's
Got me spittin on the mic tonight
I appreciate the love when I rock the stage
But I don't do this for props and things
It's nothing at all, It's Christ inside that's
Got me spittin on the mic tonight

Ain't nothing sweet about me dog but Christ within
Prior to that your boy lived a life of sin
If you catch me givin up money so folks can eat
It's really God working through me dog
I'm not that sweet
And there ain't a bone in me that's naturally good
And without the fruit of the spirit I'm actually hood
Basically it ain't nothing great in me
But graciously my God likes replacin me
With His own characteristics traits and things
The wages earned from sin He erased them things
And gave me a new family tree
That the creator of creation hisself related to me
So if it seem like I shine bright in the limelight
Or I might think I'm tight man it's a lie right?
I'm gritty like J-Silas guess my worth
Man without Christ Jesus I'm less than dirt. I'm nothing

Cats say they gon' change the game
This is Christian rap, why they barely using the savior's name
Got flows saying they rhyme is tight
Christ gave us breath to spit God gave us the mind to write
We don't deserve to shine, naw We just clay
I just came to lift up Christ and not what's my name
When I drop this flow it might sound ridiculous
But Christ smack dab in the middle so conspicuous
Homey it's not clever word play is not what the Word say
Christ in Him crucified all day e'ry day
But have it your way and blab your name
And Christ died you just trying to grab the fame
It's nothing but sound bites nothing but loud pipes
Speakin in vane man we nothing without Christ
We should use our last breath to rep the King Jesus
You shouldn't have to know our name after we leave here

I appreciate the love when I rock the stage
But I don't do this for props and things
It's nothing at all, It's Christ inside that's
Got me spittin on the mic tonight
I appreciate the love when I rock the stage
But I don't do this for props and things
It's nothing at all, It's Christ inside that's
Got me spittin on the mic tonight

I'm nothing, I'm nothing, I'm nothing, I'm nothing
I'm nothing, I'm nothing, I'm nothing, I'm nothing
I'm nothin
Next is from another great rapper - Tedashii. This is also a fairly new song, and makes it's way into the number 3 spot.

You don't know what I been through
Lost it all and my rent's due
Trouble, when it rains it floods
In my pain no it ain't all good
No but I tell them this
I'm a witness
That everything is made new
So tell em' dawg I ain't through
Feels like feels like this life just became a fight
Yeah I'm in it they know it
I know pressures on me
Yeah there's pressure on me
But tell em who ain't crack homie

[Hook - Trip Lee:]
I can't do, there ain't nothin' I can't do
There ain't nothin' I can't do
There ain't nothin' I can't do
I can't do, there ain't nothin' I can't do
There ain't nothin' I can't do
Look it ain't nothin' I can't do

[Verse 2 - Tedashii:]
OK life, for most, we know that this is not paradise
But we swear it's tight when she wear it right
I feel the heat it's Miami Vice
It's the rest in me to get the rest of me
You start burnin for that but ain't no turning me back
That's pressing me and they testing to me
To see me fail and give me Hell so I'd be burnin in that
Yeah right, life is an island which means we trapped in that
But we cool cuz the view so nice and lax
And like we don't feel the pain cuz' of laughing gas
But one blast of that and you forget that this pain is real
Yeah but no matter how good that feel
Man this pain is a thing that kill
Man I heard that so I swerve back
Curve that so let me curve back
Every time I feel that urge back
We crossing paths where we merge at
It drives we crazy but lately
Man I feel like I can make it
Cuz' last year I couldn't take it
And this strength man I can say this

[Hook - Trip Lee:]
I can't do, there ain't nothin' I can't do
There ain't nothin' I can't do
There ain't nothin' I can't do
I can't do, there ain't nothin' I can't do
There ain't nothin' I can't do
Look it ain't nothin' I can't do

[Bridge - Trip Lee:]
Might walk on water
I won't lose a step
Got-gotta go hard
But I ain't gotta do it myself
I can't do, there ain't nothin' I can't do
Feelin like I can't lose
There ain't nothin' I can't do

[Verse 3 - Lecrae:]
Hold up
What you say all that fame done gone to my head
Like that same power that save me
Can't raise me from the dead
They get me reading thinking bout keeping peace
While I'm raging war on myself
I feeling myself then I'm killing myself
I'm sipping on blood and I'm chewing on flesh
Just chill out we don't want to hear that mess
All that won't do that I can't do this
Pain, death, hurt, hate we done been through this
And I'm sure there's plenty more that I ain't been through yet
But I don't care though, bring on the heavy metal
I got a power living in me that'll never settle
Never leave nor for sake I'm a bleed never break
I'm a die come back with the keys to the safe
Gotta peek sitting deep for the things that I face
Can't erase God's ink wait clean with the paint
And I'm stained in it when the pain hit me
I would stain anything that you bring to me
The letter tell me what I can't do faithfully
The letter tell me what I can't do faithfully
The letter tell me what I can't do faithfully
I'm coming back from the dead what you saying to me
I can't do it

Now, let's talk a little Family Force 5. This song is awesome in such a unique way. :) It made it's way up to number 2.

 This is the takedown.

Knock your block off, I ain't karate kid.
Bruce Lee, giving me d-d-double vision.
No fear, no mercy.
Gloves off, try and hurt me.
You can't hurt me.
You can't hurt me.
You can't hurt me.
Uh-uh!
You can't stop me.
You can't drop me.
You can't block me. (what?)
You can't break me.
You can't shake me.
Don't make me.

This last one is my favorite. It's a cover and came to be number 1 on the countdown. But, unfortunately, there aren't any lyrics to this mash-up version. FORTUNATELY, the words are pretty clear so, yeah. I hope you love. :)
That's it for my countdown! Thank you guys for reading and don't forget to leave your comments about who YOU want to be in the next countdown. ;) ~KJ
